Clay vs Concrete Roof Tiles

The practical differences between the two most common tile types.

Clay tiled roofing detail

Clay and concrete are the two most widely used tile materials in the UK, and the right choice depends on budget, appearance, and the character of the property.

Concrete tiles are generally the more affordable option and are available in a wide range of colours and profiles, making them a practical choice for most residential re-roofs.

Clay tiles typically cost more but hold their colour better over time, as the colour is fired into the material rather than applied as a coating.

Clay tiles are also lighter than concrete, which can be a relevant factor on older roof structures where load is a consideration.

For period or listed properties, clay is often the more appropriate choice to match the character of the building — this is something we can advise on during a site visit.
